There are many different types of shellfish soup recipes using a variety of different shellfish. Like all types of seafood, shellfish, along with other fish can be a useful addition as part of a healthy balanced diet.
As well as being a good source of important protein, shellfish are low in fat, with prawns (shrimps) and lobster having less than 1 gm of fat per portion: Most, with the exception of prawns, are also very low in cholesterol. Of course, like many 'healthier' foods, the problem can be how we cook it, and if we grill or steam instead of cooking with butter or oil, shellfish can be a low-fat, low-cholesterol, healthy addition to our menu.
Although shellfish do not contain the good levels of the omega 3 fatty acids like tuna, cod and salmon, they do contain some, and this all goes to improving our heart function, thus reducing our risk of strokes or a heart attack. Research had been done to indicate that omega 3 might be helpful in preventing illnesses like depression and Alzheimer's.
Shellfish also contain vitamins and minerals; for ecxample oysters are a good source of a variety of vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3 and D) as well as being high in iron, magnesium and calcium. Indeed other shellfish such as clams, crab, mussels and prawns are a good source of iron. Oysters and scallops and other shellfish also contain the important mineral, zinc, which helps the immune system.
However, shellfish can cause allergies in some people, and if this is you, then it is better to avoid shellfish. These allergies can be very unpleasant and in some cases even life threatening. The symptoms can include swelling and redness of the skin, or swelling of the mouth and throat and even diarrhoea and vomitting.
It is important when cooking shellfish, and this includes making soup, that you use the freshest ingredients. Some products are eaten raw while others are kept 'live' until you cook them. Try to use a good Fishmonger that you know sells fresh shellfish and buy on the day of use, or for those with busy lifestyles, frozen or tinned can be used.
